The short answer

To change a car driving test, use the official GOV.UK service with your driving licence number and either your booking reference or theory test pass certificate number. In 2026, only the learner can manage the appointment, a booking can normally be changed twice, and a centre move is restricted to nearby eligible locations.

You might need to move your test because your instructor is unavailable, your preparation has changed or an earlier date has appeared. The online process is straightforward, but the 2026 rules mean it is worth checking every detail before you confirm.

How to reschedule your driving test

  1. Open the official change your driving test service.
  2. Enter your UK driving licence number.
  3. Enter your booking reference or theory test pass certificate number.
  4. Review the dates, times and centres available to your booking.
  5. Check that the new appointment works for you and your instructor.
  6. Confirm the change and keep the updated confirmation.

Your current booking should remain in place while you look. Do not cancel first merely to inspect alternatives. A cancellation is a separate action and could leave you without the appointment you already had.

Only the learner can make the change

Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the car test can book, change, cancel or swap it. An instructor can still advise you and provide their personal reference number, but they cannot manage the appointment for you.

GOV.UK also states that unofficial services are not allowed to use the booking service to search for tests. Read the current 2026 booking guidance before using any third-party service. DriveSooner is notification only and never books or changes a test.

How the two-change limit works

A car driving test can normally be changed twice. The following actions count as a change:

  • Changing the date or time.
  • Changing the test centre.
  • Swapping with another learner who already has a test booked.

If you change the date and centre during the same transaction, GOV.UK says it still counts as one change. Updating your contact details or adding or removing an instructor reference number does not use the allowance. If DVSA has to change the appointment, for example because of bad weather, the official guidance explains how the allowance is reset.

Which test centres can you move to?

Since 9 June 2026, an existing car test can normally be moved only to one of the three nearest eligible centres to the current booking location. After moving, the next permitted group is based on the new centre. GOV.UK provides an official nearby-centre list.

Before moving, check the journey and whether your instructor covers the area. You can use our test-centre directory to review local information, but the GOV.UK service remains the place where eligibility and current availability are confirmed.

How much notice do you need?

For a car driving test, you generally need to change or cancel at least 10 full working days before the appointment to avoid paying again. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not. Always check the current official wording when your appointment is close.

A date being earlier does not remove the need to prepare. Confirm that you can attend, have an appropriate test vehicle and are ready to drive safely before accepting it.

  • Is the date genuinely better than your current appointment?
  • Can your instructor or accompanying driver attend?
  • Is the test vehicle available and suitable?
  • Have you already used one of your two changes?
  • Is the new centre permitted and practical?
  • Have you read the final details before confirming?

Finding an earlier date without changing too soon
