How to Find Available Driving Test Dates in 2026

Finding a suitable practical test can be frustrating because availability is different at every centre. A date shown at one centre does not mean the same week will be available elsewhere, and a slot that appears now may be taken by another learner quickly. Understanding the current rules helps you avoid wasting one of your two permitted changes.

Use the official driving test booking service

The correct starting point for a new appointment is the official GOV.UK driving test booking page. For a car test, you must make the booking yourself. GOV.UK says you can book up to 24 weeks into the future and that the online service is generally available from 6am to 11:40pm.

You will usually need your UK driving licence number, a debit or credit card and a valid theory test pass. You can also enter your driving instructor’s personal reference number so the system can take account of the availability information your instructor has supplied.

When are new driving test dates released?

GOV.UK does not state one guaranteed nationwide day or hour when every test centre releases appointments. The official guidance confirms the 24-week booking window but does not promise that all centres add dates on the same schedule.

Availability can change for several reasons. DVSA may add examiner capacity or additional sessions, an existing appointment may be cancelled, or another learner may move to a different time. Local demand also matters: busy urban centres can lose suitable dates faster than quieter centres.

Avoid advice that guarantees a secret release time. Checking at a particular hour cannot guarantee a date, and repeated activity that does not look like normal personal use can lead to booking-service restrictions. Use the service normally and follow its current terms.

Initial booking versus changing an existing test

If you do not have a test booked

Choose a centre you genuinely intend to attend. Under the current rules, your first booking is not simply a temporary placeholder that can always be moved anywhere in the country. Check your instructor, transport and preparation before confirming.

If you already have a test booked

Use the official service for changing a driving test appointment. You need your driving licence number and either the booking reference or theory test pass certificate number. The service can show earlier appointments, later appointments and permitted alternative centres.

Do not cancel a confirmed appointment merely to look at alternatives. Use the change service so your current appointment stays in place unless you actively confirm something different.

The two-change limit matters

Car driving test appointments can normally be changed twice. Changing the date or time counts, changing the centre counts, and swapping with another learner counts. Altering the centre and date together in the same transaction counts as one change.

Because the allowance is limited, confirm that the new date works before accepting it. A date that is earlier but leaves too little preparation time may be worse than the appointment you already hold. Equally, moving to a centre your instructor cannot cover can waste a valuable change.

Choose eligible nearby centres

Since 9 June 2026, a learner can normally move a car test only to one of the three test centres nearest to the location of the current booking. GOV.UK also describes when the centre first used on the current booking remains an option.

This means broad nationwide searching is less useful once you already hold a booking. Concentrate on the centre you booked and the nearby alternatives the official system permits. How cancellations create earlier dates

When another learner changes or cancels an appointment with enough notice, that slot can become available for someone else. It may appear at any point during the booking service’s operating hours, and another learner can take it quickly.

There is no guarantee that a cancellation will appear for a particular centre, date or time. The chances depend on local demand and how flexible you can be. Broader acceptable dates and times can give you more realistic options, but you should accept only a test you can attend and are ready to take.

Allow enough time to avoid paying again

For a car driving test, GOV.UK says you need to give at least 10 full working days’ notice when changing or cancelling if you want to avoid paying again. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.

An earlier appointment can therefore have a cost consequence if it is too close to your current date. Read the confirmation screen carefully and check the official guidance before making the change. Limited evidence-based exceptions may apply in unavoidable circumstances, but they should not be assumed.

What if no dates are available?

If the official service shows no suitable dates, do not choose a centre you cannot realistically attend just to hold a booking. Recheck your preparation range, instructor availability and nearby eligible centres. Availability changes, so a centre with nothing suitable today may show a different picture later.
