Published and reviewed: 15 September 2026. This guide covers the current centre-move rules for car driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales.
The short answer
You can normally move a car driving test to the three nearest eligible centres to the centre where it is currently booked. You may also be able to return to the centre first used for that booking. The available set can change after a move because the next three centres are calculated from the new location.

The centre rule matters before you make your first booking and every time you consider an earlier appointment. A date may look ideal, but it cannot help if the official service does not allow your booking to move there.
When did the centre rule change?
The restriction took effect on 9 June 2026 and applies to car driving tests. The full position appears in the official 2026 driving test booking rules.
If your booking existed before 9 June, the rule is based on the centre where the test was booked on that date. For a new booking made after 9 June, the first centre you choose becomes important because it affects the area available for later moves.
How the three-nearest-centres rule works
Each time you change the appointment, you can normally:
- Stay at the same test centre and change the date or time.
- Move to one of the three nearest eligible centres at that point.
- Return to the centre first used for the current booking.
If you move to a nearby centre, the next set of three is worked out from that new centre. This does not give unlimited movement. You can normally change a car test only twice.
Where can you check the permitted centres?
Use the official GOV.UK list of test centres you can move to. GOV.UK notes that the list can be improved over time, so check the current version rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.
The official change service shows the options available to your actual booking. That is the final source of truth when you are ready to make a change.
Is the nearest centre always the best choice?
No. Distance is only one part of the decision. Before accepting an earlier appointment, ask:
- Does my instructor cover this test centre?
- Can I practise on roads around the area?
- Can I reach it reliably at the appointment time?
- Will the date leave enough preparation time?
- Is the improvement worth using one of my two changes?
Our driving test centre directory gives you a starting point for learning about each location. Use it for research, then confirm every booking option through GOV.UK.
Why booking a distant centre can backfire
GOV.UK advises booking at a centre you intend to use. Choosing a distant centre simply because it has a date may restrict future moves to that area. The three nearest centres to a distant booking may all be far from home.
Start with a practical location and a date when you realistically expect to be ready. Read the official booking guidance before making the first booking.
Finding an earlier test within the permitted area
Once you know the eligible centres, decide which of them you would genuinely attend. Set an earliest and latest acceptable date. This prevents you from chasing an appointment that cannot work.
Our earlier-test guide covers the full preparation process, while the rescheduling guide explains how the change limit works.
You can keep looking for an earlier driving test without keeping the booking page open all day. Tell DriveSooner, our driving test cancellation notification service, which eligible centres and dates work for you. We check throughout the day and send an instant SMS alert as soon as we detect a match. Start with select the eligible centres you want to watch.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move my driving test to any centre in the UK?
No. For car tests, the 2026 rules normally limit a move to the three nearest eligible centres or the centre first used for the current booking.
Do the three nearest centres change after I move?
Yes. The next set is normally calculated from the centre where the booking has moved, although you may also return to the first centre used for that booking.
Does changing the test centre use one of my changes?
Yes. A centre move counts as a change. Changing the centre and date together in the same transaction still counts as one change.
Check eligibility first, practicality second and availability third. That order helps you avoid wasting time on a centre your booking cannot use.
When we detect a matching slot, your SMS includes a link to GOV.UK so you can review the date and claim the appointment yourself while it is available.
DriveSooner checks for DVSA cancellations throughout the day and sends fast alerts when an earlier slot appears. Most customers find an earlier test within 1-3 days.
