Driving Test Booking Rules in 2026: What Changed?

You can make two changes to a car driving test

Since 31 March 2026, a car driving test booking can normally be changed twice. The previous limit was higher, so learners now need to be more deliberate about when they use a change. The limit applies to changes you make after the appointment has been booked.

Changing the date or time counts as a change. Moving the appointment to another test centre also counts. Swapping your appointment with another learner who already has a test booked counts too. If you alter the date and the test centre in the same transaction, GOV.UK says that still counts as one change rather than two.

Changes that do not use the limit

Updating contact or address details does not use one of your two appointment changes. Adding or removing your instructor’s reference number does not count either. If DVSA needs to change your appointment, for example because of severe weather, GOV.UK says your allowance is reset to two changes.

If you have already used both changes and need to alter the appointment again, you will generally have to cancel and make a new booking. That makes it important to keep your booking reference safe and to avoid using a change for a date or centre you are unlikely to keep.

Only the learner can book and manage a car test

Since 12 May 2026, the learner taking the test must book it personally. The same learner must also make any change, cancellation or swap. A driving instructor cannot book or manage a car test for a pupil, although an instructor can still help the learner understand the process and provide their instructor reference number.

When booking, you confirm that you are the learner taking the test and that you accept the booking service’s terms and conditions. GOV.UK advises speaking to your instructor before booking so you can agree that you are ready and check when the instructor is available.

You can start through the official GOV.UK driving test booking service. The official page says appointments can be booked up to 24 weeks ahead, the online service is generally available from 6am until 11:40pm, and there is no official waiting list or cancellation list.

You can move only to nearby eligible test centres

Since 9 June 2026, an existing car test can normally be moved only to one of the three centres nearest to the centre where it is currently booked. GOV.UK also explains circumstances in which you can move back to the centre first used on the current booking.

This makes the original booking more important than it used to be. Booking a distant centre simply because it has a date may leave you unable to move that appointment to the city you actually intended to use. Start with a realistic centre, then compare the nearby options available under the current rule.

Give 10 full working days’ notice

GOV.UK says you must give at least 10 full working days’ notice when changing or cancelling a car driving test if you want to avoid paying again. Monday to Saturday count as working days, while Sundays and public holidays do not.

You can technically make a change closer to the appointment, but you will normally have to pay for the replacement test. There are limited circumstances in which a short-notice refund may be available, including certain illnesses, injuries, bereavements, examinations or a stolen licence. Evidence is required, so consult the official appointment-change guidance rather than assuming an exception applies.

How to prepare before booking in 2026

1. Pass your theory test. You will usually need a valid theory test pass before booking your practical car test.
2. Agree that you are ready. Speak to your instructor and use a realistic test date rather than taking a slot you are not prepared to use.
3. Choose the right starting centre. Your ability to move is geographically restricted, so do not treat the first centre as a placeholder.
4. Add your instructor reference. This allows the booking service to check the availability information your instructor has provided.
5. Keep your references secure. You need your licence number and booking or theory reference to manage the appointment.
6. Use changes carefully. There are only two, and changing several details together can be more efficient than making separate changes.
