The short answer

You can normally make two changes to an existing car driving test booking. Changing the date, time or test centre counts. Swapping with another learner also counts. If you change several details in one transaction, that still counts as one change. Updating contact details or an instructor reference does not count.

The two-change limit has applied since 31 March 2026. It makes planning more important because moving to an appointment that later proves unsuitable can use half of the flexibility attached to your booking.

What counts as one change?

According to the official 2026 booking rules, these actions count:

  • Changing the test date.
  • Changing the test time.
  • Moving the test to another centre.
  • Swapping the appointment with another learner who already has a test.

Changing the date and centre in the same transaction counts as one change, not two. Check every detail before confirming so that one transaction solves the full problem.

What does not count?

Updating your address or contact details does not use a change. Adding or removing your driving instructor's personal reference number does not count either. A change that DVSA has to make, for example because of bad weather, does not count against you.

If DVSA changes your test, your allowance can be reset to two changes. For a DVSA change made from 19 June 2026, you can use those reset changes online. Follow the current instructions in your DVSA message and the official booking rules.

How can you check changes safely?

Sign in through the official change your driving test service. The system will show the options attached to your booking.

Use our complete rescheduling guide for the step-by-step process. Keep your current booking until the official service confirms a replacement.

Use each change for a genuine improvement

Before confirming a new appointment

  • Compare it with the date you already hold.
  • Check your instructor and vehicle availability.
  • Confirm that you will be ready.
  • Check the centre is one you can move to.
  • Make sure you can attend without relying on uncertain travel.

Centre moves are normally limited to the three nearest eligible locations. Read the official nearby-centre list and our guide to which test centres you can move to.

Plan for more than the first move

Before using the first change, consider what you would do if your circumstances changed again. A very early appointment might look attractive now, but a work shift, instructor clash or extra lesson could leave you needing the second change immediately.

Write down the dates and times that are definitely possible. If you are changing the centre as well, make both updates in the same transaction once you are certain. This keeps the process clear and avoids using separate changes for details that could have been confirmed together.

What happens after both changes are used?

GOV.UK says you must cancel the test and book a new one if you need another change after using both. That ends the current booking, so do not do it casually.

You normally need to cancel at least 10 full working days before the test date to receive a full refund. Sundays and public holidays are not working days for this calculation. Check the current instructions on GOV.UK before acting.

A new booking receives its own change allowance. Book through the official driving test service and choose a centre you genuinely intend to use.

Can alerts help preserve your changes?

An alert can help you assess an appointment before you use a change.

Finding a better date needn't mean checking the booking system between every lesson, shift or lecture. We check your selected eligible centres throughout the day. As soon as we detect a matching earlier slot, DriveSooner sends an instant SMS alert so you can take a look. Start with read what happens after an alert or set up alerts for realistic dates and eligible centres.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing the date and centre together count twice?

No. If both details are changed in the same transaction, GOV.UK says it counts as one change.

Does adding my instructor reference count as a change?

No. Adding or removing the instructor's reference number does not count towards the two-change limit.

Can I make a third change?

Not to the same booking. If both changes have been used, you need to cancel and make a new booking, subject to the refund notice rules.

Think of each change as limited booking flexibility. Use it only when the replacement date and centre are clearly better than the appointment you already have.

When we detect a matching slot, your SMS includes a link to GOV.UK so you can review the date and claim the appointment yourself while it is available.
