The short answer

GOV.UK says new driving test appointments are released 24 weeks ahead at 6am every Monday. You may enter a queue when the booking service opens, and the service will tell you the estimated wait. Prepare your licence, payment and centre choices before starting. Cancellation appointments are different because they can appear at any time during the week.

Monday morning is important for learners trying to make a new booking, but it is often misunderstood. It is the scheduled release point for appointments at the edge of the 24-week booking window. It is not the only time an earlier date can appear, and joining at exactly 6am does not guarantee a suitable appointment at your preferred centre.

What is released at 6am on Monday?

The official GOV.UK booking page says new appointments are added 24 weeks in advance and released at 6am every Monday. These are newly opened future appointments, not a weekly batch containing every cancellation from the previous seven days.

Earlier appointments can return whenever another learner changes or cancels. That can happen at any time during the week. GOV.UK also states that there is no official waiting list or cancellation list.

Why is there a booking queue?

Many learners try to use the service when the new week opens. GOV.UK may place visitors in a queue and display an estimated wait. The queue manages access to the booking service.

Leave the queue page open and follow the instructions shown. Avoid opening many competing tabs or repeatedly restarting unless the official service tells you to do so. The online booking service is normally available from 6am to 11:40pm.

Prepare before 6am

Have these ready

  • Your UK driving licence number.
  • A credit or debit card.
  • Your instructor's personal reference number, if you want the system to check their availability.
  • Your preferred test centre and realistic nearby alternatives.
  • A date by which your instructor expects you to be ready.

The official 2026 booking rules also recommend using a centre you intend to attend and a date when you realistically expect to be ready.

Choose the first centre carefully

Since 9 June 2026, later centre moves are normally limited to the three nearest eligible centres. Booking anywhere in the country with the intention of moving later can leave you stuck in the wrong area.

Check the official nearby-centre guidance and browse our test-centre directory. Think about travel time, your instructor's coverage and whether you can practise locally.

What if Monday has no suitable appointment?

Do not assume that the whole week is lost. Another learner may change or cancel later. If you already hold a test, keep it and check through the official change service. If you do not yet have a booking, return to the official booking page during its opening hours.

Our guide for when no driving test dates are available sets out the safest options. The separate guide on when cancellations appear explains why there is no single cancellation hour.

After you secure a booking

Save the confirmation and check it carefully. Speak to your instructor and keep preparing. Car bookings can normally be changed twice, so do not use those changes casually.

If the confirmed date is too far away, read our guide to finding an earlier driving test. DriveSooner's UK driving test cancellation alerts can send SMS and email notifications when a possible matching earlier appointment is detected. You remain responsible for checking and changing the appointment through GOV.UK.

You can choose your dates and eligible centres for alerts once you know what would genuinely suit you.

Frequently asked questions

Are all driving test cancellations released at 6am Monday?

No. New appointments 24 weeks ahead are released then. Earlier appointments can appear whenever another learner changes or cancels during the week.

Does joining the queue reserve a test?

No. The queue controls access to the booking service. A test is not secured until the official booking process confirms it.

Can my driving instructor join the queue and book for me?

You make the booking or change through the official DVSA service. DriveSooner helps before that point by checking throughout the day and sending SMS and email alerts when a possible earlier appointment matches your preferences.

Prepare before Monday, choose the first centre carefully and treat the 6am release as one opportunity rather than the only chance to find a test.

When we detect a matching slot, your SMS includes a link to GOV.UK so you can review the date and claim the appointment yourself while it is available.
