Seeing an earlier date can feel urgent, particularly after a long wait. The best response is quick but careful. A slot is only useful if it is available to your booking, falls within the dates you selected and works for your instructor or test vehicle.
First, compare it with your current booking
Read the alert closely. Check the test centre, date and time against your current appointment. An appointment that is only a few days earlier may not be worth using one of your limited changes. A much earlier date may still be unsuitable if you need more lessons or cannot arrange a car.
Keep your current booking while you check. Do not cancel it simply because an alert has arrived. The official change your driving test service lets you look for another appointment without giving up the one you already hold.
Confirm that the centre is available to you
Since 9 June 2026, a car test can normally be moved only to the three nearest eligible centres to the centre currently attached to the booking, or back to the centre first used for that booking. The available options are shown when you manage the appointment.
Check the official nearby driving test centre list and use our test-centre directory to understand the location before making a decision. Consider the journey, local roads and whether your instructor covers that centre.
Check how many changes you have left
Car test bookings can normally be changed twice. Changing the date, time or centre counts as a change. Changing more than one detail in the same transaction still counts as one change. A swap with another learner also counts.

- Ask your instructor whether the date and time work.
- Confirm which car you will use for the test.
- Make sure you can reach the centre with enough time to spare.
- Check that the date is not earlier than you can safely prepare for.
- Have your driving licence number and booking details ready.
The government's Ready to Pass? guidance recommends taking the test when you can drive without prompts, avoid serious or dangerous mistakes, pass mock tests and manage your nerves. An earlier appointment should support your preparation rather than interrupt it.
