When Are Driving Test Appointments Released in 2026?

If you have heard that driving tests are released on Monday mornings, that is partly right. DVSA releases one new week of standard appointments at 6am every Monday, including bank holidays. Those appointments are 24 weeks ahead. Earlier appointments and cancellations do not follow that Monday schedule.

The short answer

A new week of driving test appointments is added at 6am each Monday. If you want a date much sooner than 24 weeks away, joining the Monday queue does not give you an advantage. Earlier dates can appear when another learner changes or cancels, or when DVSA adds examiner capacity. There is no fixed national release time for those appointments.

What happens at 6am on Monday?

DVSA opens appointments for one additional week, 24 weeks into the future. Demand can be heavy, so the booking service may place visitors in a queue. That queue is mainly useful for learners who genuinely want one of the newly released dates at the end of the booking window.

If you already have a test and want something earlier, Monday at 6am is not a special cancellation window. DVSA specifically says there is no benefit in joining that queue for an earlier appointment. Why do earlier appointments appear?

Availability changes when learners move or cancel bookings and when DVSA adds extra examiner time. A suitable date might appear on a Tuesday afternoon, late in the week or at the weekend. It can also disappear quickly if another learner confirms it first.

Once you select an appointment and accept the timing warning, DVSA gives you 15 minutes to finish the booking. The service signs you out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Have your driving licence number, theory test pass details and payment information ready before you begin.

How long are learners currently waiting?

DVSA says half of the learners who took a test in July 2026 waited no more than 11.1 weeks. That is a national midpoint, not a promise for your local centre. Busy areas can behave very differently from quieter centres, and availability can change from one day to the next.

Before moving to an earlier date

The 2026 booking rules make it worth choosing carefully. A car test can normally be changed twice, and you can usually move only to one of the three nearest eligible centres or return to the original centre. Only the learner can manage the booking.

• Check that your instructor and test car are available.
• Make sure the date leaves enough time to prepare properly.
• Confirm that the centre is permitted under the nearest-centres rule.
• Remember that accepting the date normally uses one of your two changes.
• Give at least 10 full working days' notice if you later need to move or cancel without paying again.
